What is Hepatitis?

Hepatitis is liver inflammation. Types of hepatitis are:

• Viral hepatitis types A-E (B and C are the most common in the US)
• Alcoholic hepatitis
• Autoimmune hepatitis

Every type of hepatitis is unique, and some start as another disease. For example, people struggling with alcoholism may first develop a fatty liver. Then, if drinking continues, the disease can evolve into alcoholic hepatitis. The different types of hepatitis vary considerably. Some (acute viral hepatitis) go away in time, but others (chronic hepatitis) are lifelong diseases.
